AIKEN, SC | October 2026 — On Saturday, October 3, 2026, Successteam Foundation for Youth Development hosted its Successteam Jr. Leadership Academy (SJLA) 2K26 at Aiken Technical College, bringing together middle school students for a full day of leadership development, high school readiness, personal growth, and meaningful engagement.

Successteam Youth Council Scholars take center stage in developing middle school students through leadership, high school readiness, and real-world experiences. Built around the theme “High School 101,” the conference offered seventh and eighth grade students an opportunity to learn directly from those who understand their next chapter best: current high school students.

What made SJLA 2K26 especially significant was not simply what participants learned, but who was responsible for teaching them.

From conference planning and session development to presentations, participant engagement, and event execution, Successteam Youth Council Scholars assumed meaningful leadership responsibilities throughout the experience. The result was a powerful demonstration of youth developing youth.

A Conference Designed by Youth, for Youth

SJLA 2K26 was intentionally structured to place Successteam Youth Council Scholars at the forefront of the participant experience.

Under the guidance of Successteam Organizational Leadership and Conference Managers, Scholars served as conference leaders, presenters, participant hosts, operations support, and session observers. The conference featured six breakout sessions addressing topics relevant to students preparing to enter high school, including academic expectations, personal identity, independence, leadership, entrepreneurship, and navigating new opportunities.

Sessions such as Everything I Wish I Knew About High School, Finding Yourself Without Losing Yourself, Entrepreneurship in High School, and the two-part Growing Up series encouraged participants to consider not only how to succeed academically, but how to develop personally throughout their high school journey.

Interactive activities, candid conversations, and practical advice created opportunities for participants to engage with their presenters beyond traditional classroom instruction. For Youth Council Scholars, the responsibility extended beyond delivering information. They were challenged to prepare effectively, communicate confidently, manage their responsibilities, work collaboratively, and serve as positive examples for younger students.

Preparing Students for More Than High School

While high school readiness served as the foundation of SJLA 2K26, the conference emphasized a broader message: high school is more than earning grades and credits toward graduation. It is also a period of discovering personal interests, developing independence, building meaningful relationships, strengthening leadership skills, and preparing for future opportunities.

Participants explored these ideas through peer-led workshops, the Successteam Experience presentation, and Successteam Athletics, which introduced additional opportunities for teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal development.

The conference concluded with a Completer’s Ceremony recognizing participants for their commitment to learning and growth, alongside an opportunity for families to engage with participating community and educational partners.

The Numbers Tell a Powerful Story

Following the conference, participants completed Successteam’s post-event survey, providing valuable insight into the experience and its impact.

The findings reflected strong participant confidence, satisfaction, and appreciation for learning directly from high school students.

  • 100% reported that learning directly from current high school students helped them feel more prepared for high school.
  • 100% rated their overall SJLA experience as Good or Excellent, with 65% selecting Excellent.
  • 86% reported confidence in understanding academic expectations for high school.
  • 78% reported feeling prepared to enter high school.

The data also revealed an encouraging difference in how participants viewed the purpose of high school. Beyond the numbers, participants described SJLA as uplifting, welcoming, and an opportunity to connect with others while learning more about themselves.

Developing Leaders by Allowing Them to Lead

Perhaps one of the most meaningful outcomes of SJLA 2K26 was the opportunity it provided Successteam Youth Council Scholars to demonstrate their own leadership development. Rather than simply participating in another program, Scholars were responsible for helping deliver one. Their responsibilities required preparation, accountability, collaboration, communication, adaptability, and the ability to positively influence younger students.

Organizational Leadership assessed the overall Scholar execution as exceptional, recognizing the professionalism, teamwork, and ownership demonstrated throughout the conference. The experience reinforced a foundational belief within Successteam: leadership development becomes even more meaningful when young people are given opportunities to apply what they have learned in service to others.

Middle school participants were developed through the experience. Youth Council Scholars were developed by leading it. That exchange represents the heart of the Successteam leadership pipeline.

Building the Next Generation of Leaders

SJLA 2K26 represented another meaningful chapter in Successteam’s continued commitment to developing future-ready young people throughout the region.

As the organization advances into its next era of institutional growth, experiences like SJLA demonstrate the value of intentional leadership development, peer mentorship, community partnership, and providing young people with opportunities to lead in meaningful ways.

Successteam extends its appreciation to Aiken Technical College, participating community partners, families, volunteers, Conference Managers, and the Youth Council Scholars whose commitment helped bring the experience to life.

Most importantly, the organization celebrates every middle school participant who embraced the opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for their next chapter. The success of SJLA 2K26 serves as a reminder that developing the next generation of leaders does not have to wait until adulthood.

Sometimes, the next generation is best prepared by the generation immediately ahead of them.
