The third scholar-facing day of the 8th Annual Successteam Leadership Academy challenged scholars to move beyond understanding the Successteam standard and begin preparing for life beyond it.
Centered around the theme of Scholar Development, Day Three focused on helping scholars build the confidence, skills, and preparation needed to lead themselves, influence others, and take meaningful steps toward their future. Through college readiness, career exploration, presentation design, public speaking, and electoral preparation, scholars were introduced to practical tools that support success in school, career, leadership, and life.
The day began with breakfast at USC Aiken Dining, giving scholars time to gather, reset, and prepare for a full day of learning and development. From there, scholars moved into targeted college and career readiness sessions designed to meet them where they are in their academic journey.
Ninth and tenth grade scholars focused on early college readiness, gaining insight into the habits, planning, and personal responsibility needed to prepare for future opportunities. Eleventh and twelfth grade scholars engaged in college and career readiness work connected to post-secondary planning, career direction, and the decisions that come with preparing for life after high school.
By separating scholars into grade-level groups, the experience allowed each student to receive information that matched their current stage of development. Younger scholars were encouraged to begin thinking ahead, while upperclassmen were challenged to make stronger connections between their goals, their next steps, and the preparation required to reach them.
After lunch at the Pacers’ Dome, scholars participated in a college and career fair designed to expand their understanding of post-secondary opportunities. Scholars were given a Successteam plan and scavenger hunt activity to guide their conversations with vendors, colleges, community partners, business owners, entrepreneurs, and organizations.
The fair gave scholars direct access to professionals and institutions that could help them better understand the options available after high school. Through networking and guided exploration, scholars learned about different career fields, college pathways, training opportunities, and community resources while connecting those opportunities to their personal goals.
The afternoon continued with a Canva presentation workshop led by guest presenter Deontae M. Jones, Communications and Marketing Specialist for the Department of Student Life and Engagement at Augusta University. During the session, scholars learned how to use Canva as a creative and professional tool for presentations, graphic design, portfolios, marketing, personal branding, and leadership communication.
The workshop helped scholars understand that visual communication is an important part of leadership. Whether creating a presentation, designing a portfolio, building a campaign graphic, or preparing materials for college and career opportunities, scholars were challenged to think about how they present themselves and their ideas to the world.
Later in the day, scholars participated in Public Speaking 101, a session focused on the fundamentals of communication, confidence, and presence. Scholars explored why public speaking is an essential leadership skill and how strong communication can support them in interviews, presentations, classrooms, careers, and community leadership.
The session emphasized that public speaking is not just about standing in front of a room. It is about clarity, confidence, preparation, and the ability to use one’s voice with purpose. Scholars were reminded that their voice is one of the most powerful tools they have as leaders.
The day concluded with a deeper introduction to the Successteam Executive Team structure and the upcoming election process. Scholars were introduced to five core leadership positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Outreach Coordinator.
Through interest meetings and Campaign 101, scholars learned about the responsibility connected to leadership positions, the importance of campaigning, the electoral process, and the value of voting. Scholars interested in serving had the opportunity to begin aligning themselves with the positions that best matched their strengths, interests, and commitment to the organization.
This portion of the day helped scholars understand that leadership within Successteam is not about popularity or title. It is about service, accountability, representation, and the willingness to lead with purpose.
Day Three reinforced the idea that scholar development is a process. It requires exposure, preparation, communication, confidence, and opportunity. From college readiness to public speaking, from career exploration to campaign preparation, scholars were challenged to see themselves not only as participants in the academy, but as future leaders preparing to make an impact.
As the academy continued, scholars moved forward with a stronger understanding of who they are, where they are going, and how the skills they are developing through Successteam can help prepare them for the next level.
“When scholars are given the tools to prepare, the space to lead, and the confidence to use their voice, development becomes more than a lesson it becomes a pathway to purpose.”
